Applications Open for NH Crop Loss Program

March 7, 2024 By Devon Pasco

As of March 1st, New Hampshire farmers who suffered significant crop losses due to extreme weather in 2023 may apply for the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture’s Crop Loss Program, which aims to provide immediate relief to farms in need prior to the 2024 growing season. Low temperatures and late frosts in mid-May caused considerable damage to fruit crops throughout the state, and record level precipitation and subsequent flooding caused additional losses throughout the Summer and Fall.

The state reports that it will be reviewing applications for the $8 million relief program weekly in order to provide support to those eligible in a timely manner. This is an excellent show of support for our hardworking Granite State farmers, and we encourage any of our customers who qualify to apply before the May 15th deadline. Criteria for eligibility and instructions on how to apply can be found on the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture’s website.

A Celebration of Thirty Years

January 19, 2024 By Devon Pasco

Officiated on November 22nd 1994, RMI (originally White Mountain Resource Management Services Inc.) was just a small operation run out of a home office in New Hampton, NH. Owners Shelagh, Marty, and Charley had worked together previously for an organic residuals recycling company in Maine, and had the skills, knowledge, and love for the industry to grow RMI from the ground up.

Now headquartered out of Holderness, NH (and officially Resource Management Inc. as of January 1st, 2002) our company now includes a Compliance, Sales, Operations, and Admin Team, along with our own fleet of trucks and team of drivers.

2024 is officially our 30th year of operation, and the entire team is truly over the moon to celebrate this big milestone. We wouldn’t be where we are today without our partners, customers, and awesome staff, so a big thank you to everyone who has walked alongside us on this journey so far.  You may start to see our 30th anniversary logo popping up at tradeshows and in the field, and hope you’ll celebrate along with us throughout 2024!

NHWPCA Fall Meeting

November 13, 2023 By Devon Pasco

Attended by Wastewater Operators, Engineers, and associated industry professionals, the annual NHWPCA Fall Meeting was held this year on September 28th in Durham, NH. The Meeting began with a tour of the Durham Wastewater Treatment Facility where staff showcased the most recent upgrade projects including aerated grit equipment, odor control for sludge processing, Bardenpho processes for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorous, and Huber inclined screw presses.

During the tour, RMI Operations Manager Pete Burnham, Dispatcher Eryka Clive, and Project Manager April Sargent were given the opportunity to present an overview of the function of RMI as a residuals management company. Incorporating this element into the story helps to paint an even broader picture of the wastewater treatment process and highlights the many innovative uses for biosolids available today.

We are thankful to the organizers of this years NHWPCA Fall Meeting for allowing RMI the opportunity to explain our part of the story, as well as to Chief Operator Dan Peterson and his team for conducting the tour of the Durham Wastewater Treatment Facility. It was also a pleasure seeing long time customer and friend of RMI, Ray Vermette, in attendance at the group luncheon. We hope to continue adding to the conversation at future NHWPCA events and look forward to seeing everyone there.

Support Wood Ash – HB 142

October 20, 2023 By Devon Pasco

Wood is Good, and so is Wood Ash!

Burning wood from local sources to generate clean, local energy makes sense for New Hampshire.  Keeping the Burgess wood-fired biomass plant operating is especially good for northern NH because it is a staple of the economy for forestry and for the City of Berlin.  It is also good for NH farmers who use the WOOD ASH from this power plant as a local fertilizer to sweeten the soil on their farm fields, and to grow better crops.  We urge the Legislature to override the veto on HB 142 this Thursday 10/26.

Please contact your NH legislators and let them know you support HB 142 and ask them to vote to keep this biomass plant operating.  https://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/house/members/

Manufactured Topsoil Approved by State Agency

July 28, 2023 By Devon Pasco

Written collaboratively with the Northeast Biosolids & Residuals Association (NEBRA) and the Green Mountain Water Environment Association (GMWEA) this article highlights the benefits of residuals recycling and explores the very first Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) construction project that was completed using our Manufactured Topsoil.

Authorization to supply Manufactured Topsoil to these transportation construction projects was the result of collaborative meetings between RMI, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), VTrans, the Recycled Materials Working Group (RMWG), and Engineers Construction Inc. (ECI.) Approval was received in July of 2022, and shortly after this our work with the Williston Park and Ride project began. RMI supplied biosolids, paper fiber, and wood ash to our distribution partner ECI who screened and mixed the materials into a blended soil. Healthy, robust microbial activity resulted in a thick cover of grass sprouting up within just a few weeks. All parties were very satisfied with the end result, and the Park and Ride remains bordered by hearty vegetation.

All residuals used in this mix were sourced from generators in Vermont, including Soundview Paper, the largest producer of residuals within the state. Recycling these materials not only supports the local circular economy by ensuring that nothing goes to waste, but also diverts them from landfills subject to capacity. While we did encounter a brief pause due to PFAS scrutiny, soil test results along with the support of Vermont regulators, generators, soil scientists, and the biosolids community allowed us to resume.

Our Manufactured Topsoil was created as a way to beneficially and sustainably re-use residuals, and continued VTrans projects will provide outlets for these recycled materials across the state. This is thanks to the hard work of many individuals, as well as continued support from the state of Vermont for sustainable solutions and the reduction of waste.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at RMF

July 17, 2023 By Devon Pasco

July 13th was a momentous day for our team. After several months of planning, coordinating, permitting, and construction, we watched our two new biosolids storage buildings go from a set of plans to two fully formed structures. These two additional Calhoun structures sit diagonally from our original pair of buildings, making a total of four on site.

In celebration of their completion, RMI’s three founders along with members of the operations, compliance, sales, and administrative teams gathered together for an official ribbon cutting ceremony on-site. As an unsuspecting guest of honor, Project Manager Wes Wixson of Infrastructure Construction Corporation was surprised with the unveiling of the name of the second building, officially the “Wes E. Wixson Biosolids Storage Building No.2.”

Our group assembled around the entrances of buildings one and two with Co-owners Marty Riehs and Charley Hanson each holding an end of the ribbon. President Shelagh Connelly performed the honorable task of cutting the ribbon, a symbolic act of progress and dedication to responsible and sustainable residuals management.

This site is the only private merchant biosolids storage and processing facility in New Hampshire, and the expansion is something we think is truly worth celebrating. One hundred percent of the biosolids (and all other residuals) that we manage are beneficially reused in our recycling programs to improve the health and quality of local soils. When land applied, biosolids act as a nutrient rich fertilizer high in organic matter and micro-nutrients. They are an excellent source of slow-release nitrogen and are an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective alternative to commercial fertilizers as well as an essential component in our Manufactured Topsoil.

The ability to utilize these two new structures for the processing and management of biosolids is a win all around. This expansion aids in global efforts to divert usable materials from our landfills and provides numerous benefits to the generators and end– users of these materials, as well as to organics recycling efforts throughout the Northeast.
